Questions to ask a therapist, counselor, or psychologist in Los Angeles

Now that you have found a few therapists, counselors, or psychologists in Los Angeles that seem like they might be a good fit, what do you do next? Most therapist will offer a phone consultation, but what should you ask? How can this call help you find the right therapist for you? Most people are nervous when calling a therapist for the first time, so here are some guidelines that I hope will make the conversation a little bit easier.

First, remember that you are trying to figure out if the therapist is the right fit for you. The therapist will be wanting to learn about you and what you are looking for and should share how they work and how they will help you. Since feeling comfortable and understood by your therapist is the most important aspect of the work, this is what you are trying to assess on the call. These questions are just a guide to get started so you can see how you feel when talking to them.

 Questions to ask:

- What is your approach/style?

- What experience do you have with x? (Whatever you are coming to therapy for) How do you work with x?

Once you have a sense of the way the therapist works, if you feel like you have a good connection with them you can ask some logistical questions.

- Do you have a cancellation policy?

- How often should we meet?

- What availability do you have for scheduling?

- How does payment work?

- How will I know when to end therapy?

I hope this helps you feel a little more clear about what to ask when looking for a therapist.
